When you visit Turks & Caicos, one of the best ways to experience the culture and tradition of the islands is to try some of the Turks’ infamous conch. Pronounced "konk," this native island creature lives in a shell and as the animal grows, it builds an increasingly larger and larger shell. Some Conch shells can grow several feet in size. Many of the Turks & Caicos Island stories and traditions revolve around this beautiful animal. At Long Bay Beach Club, you’ll have plenty of ways to experience these traditions for yourself!
One of the ways to enjoy the islands' culinary traditions is to visit one of the local restaurants that serve conch. There is seemingly no end to the ways that conch can be prepared by some of the top chefs in the Turks & Caicos Islands. Fried conch, conch cakes, conch salad, conch fritters, and conch chowder are all popular ways to enjoy the island delicacy. Another common way is cracked conch highly seasoned with a mix of island spices. You can try all these and more when you visit our Islands. Our concierge is ready and happy to make great restaurant recommendations for you!
Want to learn more about the Turks number one export? The Caicos Conch Farm in Providenciales is one of the top attractions in the capital city of the Turks & Caicos Islands. This wildlife sanctuary and habitat features a tour of the conch's life cycle. Here, the conchs are grown in saltwater pools where visitors can access “touch and feel” areas to see the creature up close. Guests can also learn about the role that conchs play in the environment and why they are culturally and historically important to the traditions of the Turks & Caicos Islands. At the end of the tour, you can stop by the gift shop and purchase jewelry, books, postcards or your own whole empty conch shell.
The Turks and Caicos annual Conch Festival takes place in November each year. The festival includes all your favorite conch foods and much more. It takes place over a few days, and each day has different events. Get in on the ‘Conch-etition’ activities and try the conch races or enter the Pot of Gold Raffle for fabulous prizes. Among the Conch activities there’s also live music from local bands and family-friendly activities such as bounce houses and face painting for children.
If you haven’t had your fill of conch after all this, you’re in luck since the Turks & Caicos Islands allow you to take home up to three empty conch shells. Taking home one of the shells is a fun way to preserve your memories and enjoy a natural souvenir of your stay. The conch shells can be found on the beaches or purchased from one of the open-market vendors.
